How to Make a Wooden Picture Frame

If you have a photo or some artwork that you would like to have framed you can make that frame yourself. In fact, with just a little work you can make your very own wooden picture frame. An advantage of making your own wooden picture frame is that you can make it any size that you like. So, if you have something that is odd-shaped you will not have to worry about finding a frame to fit it if you do it yourself. Making a wooden picture frame is fairly easy and requires no previous building experience.

Items you will need:

  • wood
  • nails
  • hammer
  • wood glue

Decide on the size that you want your wooden picture frame. If you will be framing something with matting be sure to use the size of the matting instead of the picture or artwork.

Pick out the type of wood you want to use for your wooden picture frame. If you are unsure of what type you want you can visit a local home improvement store to see the choices you have available.

Cut the wood to the appropriate size for your frame. It is possible that the place you buy the wood from will cut it to your size at not extra cost. If not, you can cut it yourself with a handsaw or a table saw.

Put the wood pieces together to form the frame on a flat surface. Use wood glue and nails to attach the pieces together. Glue corners together first and let dry. When dry, put two nails in each corner for extra stability.

Paint or stain the wood frame to your liking. To make the wooden picture frame presentable, either paint or stain the frame. You can get wood stain or paint from a local home improvement store.

Get glass for the frame. You will need a piece of glass for the front of the frame. You can buy this pre-cut from a local framing store or glass shop.
